Tamer Badr

Tamer Badr

About him

Major Tamer Badr is a former officer in the Egyptian Armed Forces. He participated in the Egyptian revolution and had a role in the revolutionary movement that followed, where he expressed clear positions towards the political events that took place in the country.
Due to his political positions and his sit-in in Tahrir Square during the Mohamed Mahmoud events in November 2011 for 17 days, he was subjected to security persecution and then arrested in Tahrir Square by members of the Egyptian Military Intelligence, and was militarily tried and imprisoned for a year in Military Intelligence Prison and then Military Prison, and then retired early from military service in January 2015.
Tamer Badr presented new visions that sparked widespread debate in intellectual circles. In his book The Awaited Messages, he discussed the difference between a prophet and a messenger, and argued that the Prophet Muhammad is the Seal of the Prophets, as stated in the Holy Quran, but not necessarily the Seal of the Messengers. He based his argument on a range of Qur'anic evidence and hadiths that he believed supported his thesis, which led to a great controversy between his supporters and opponents, especially in traditional religious circles.
Tamer Badr faced widespread criticism for his intellectual theses, and his book The Awaited Messages was considered a departure from mainstream Islamic thought. Despite the controversy, he continued to research and write about issues of religious and political reform, emphasising the importance of rereading religious texts with a new methodology commensurate with the developments of the times.
In addition to his interest in thought, Tamer Badr has a reformist vision in the political sphere. He believes that building just societies requires a comprehensive review of political and religious systems and the need to break the intellectual stagnation that hinders the development of Islamic societies. Despite the challenges he has faced, he continues to present his visions through his writings and articles, believing that intellectual dialogue is the best way to achieve the desired change.

His position on the Tamarod movement and the Brotherhood

Major Tamer Badr was not in favour of Morsi's rule but was against overthrowing him and replacing him with the return of the military council he had revolted against. 30 He warned the revolutionaries in several articles, including the following

Message to Tamarod participants

Major Tamer Badr had several articles in which he warned Tamarod participants of the consequences of their political mistakes and what will happen after 30 June, including the following article

A message to my friends and comrades from the Tamarod campaign

If I hated you, I would not write to you these notes about your campaign, but I know how patriotic you are and your dedication to the revolution, so please accept my notes with open arms and consider them from a brother who wants the good of the country but with another vision that differs from yours, knowing that our goal is the same, which is the good of our beloved Egypt
It is possible that my vision is wrong and you are the one who is right, so I am offering you my view of your campaign so that we can integrate our vision together and come up with the right solutions from our crisis, so please accept my remarks, namely

1- Unfortunately, we did not learn from history, we overthrew Mubarak and let the military council rule, so do we repeat the same mistake and wait for the military council to rule us in the same way and with different people
2- There are many felouls who support the Tamarod campaign and go along with it because they are sure that the former regime will return in a different form
3- It is illogical that the campaign aims to topple Morsi and install a civilian presidential council. Who are the members of this council? Who are the political forces that agreed on it? I think the idea of a civilian presidential council was one of the solutions two years ago because we were already in a transitional period, but now this solution does not make sense because the people are not willing to endure another transitional period.
4- It is illogical that the goals of the campaign are to hold early presidential elections. Who will supervise the holding of these elections and who will call for them? Is President Morsi unlikely to call for early elections when he knows that these elections are a death certificate for the Muslim Brotherhood, and if the goals of the Tamarod campaign are to overthrow Morsi and the military council after him and then call for presidential elections, this is considered a dream because the return of the military council to rule means staying in it for at least twenty years and this time it will be with popular support because simple citizens are tired of the revolution and in this case the revolutionaries of Tahrir will be a minority and the revolution will fail.
5- There are some revolutionaries who want to remove Morsi from the presidency by any means whatsoever as a result of their sense of betrayal by the Muslim Brotherhood and the desire to take revenge on the group makes them take unplanned and unplanned steps and unfortunately the remnants of the former regime exploit this desire for revenge and channel it for their purposes of returning to power again.
Solution
1- The campaign should have a clear goal of overthrowing Morsi and taking over the government with several personalities agreed upon by the political forces and expressing the revolution so that we do not leave an opportunity for the military council to rule us again and the revolution fails.
2- If the political forces do not agree now on a figure to take over after Morsi, is it logical that they will agree on it during the rule of the fulouls or the military council after Morsi? Either agree now or wait 3 years to agree during the next presidential elections.
3- For myself, it is illogical for me to revolt for the return of the military council after having revolted previously until it hands over power to an elected president, otherwise I am going round in circles unless there is an alternative agreed upon by the political forces
After these remarks, which I would not have recommended to my friends, whom I know how patriotic they are, and God knows how much I love them and if I did not love them, I would not have advised them and risked my future for the sake of my advice to them
The reason for the failure of our revolution until now is the lack of planning, and I know for sure that there are some Tahrir revolutionaries who have the same fears as me about the campaign, but they do not want to reveal their fears for fear of being accused of betraying the revolution, resignation and disloyalty, but I am not the type of person who sees a mistake and is silent about it for fear of being accused of treason, and the days will prove the correctness of my point of view.
Major Tamer Badr"

Message to the Muslim Brotherhood

Major Tamer Badr had several articles in which he warned the Brotherhood of the consequences of their political mistakes and what things will become after 30 June includes the following article

I have always been accustomed to speaking the truth, and as I sent a letter before to my friends in the Tamarod campaign and confronted them with their mistakes, I had to confront you with your mistakes. I know many friends from your group and I know very well that no group or movement is good or bad, and there is no political movement in the world that has absolute right or whose decisions are always correct, it is possible that your decisions may be wrong at times.
I hope that you will accept my criticism of your group's policy with open arms, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Rashidun caliphs used to accept criticism from those lesser than them and always changed their decisions after such criticism.
1- The Muslim Brotherhood had a great popularity among the people before the revolution until Mubarak stepped down, so you should review yourselves a little, why did this popularity decline day by day after stepping down until now?
2- It must be recognised that Tantawi has succeeded in reducing your popularity. He baited you several times during his rule. Unfortunately, you swallowed every bait he threw at you, and each bait lost your popularity with the revolutionaries until there is no trust between you and them now, and the lack of trust is caused by you, not the revolutionaries.
3- The agreements prior to Morsi's rule still affect his rule of the country until now and you understand my meaning well, so if you think that people will forget this with time, you are delusional.
4- My support for Morsi's stay until the end of his term does not mean that I support all his policies, but because I am convinced that toppling him now would mean the return of the Fulouls to power or the return of the military council, and then the revolution will have failed greatly and we may even enter a civil war whose consequences are known only to God Almighty Almighty.
5- Talking about the application of Sharia is undisputed among most Egyptians, we all want to apply Sharia, but what you don't know is that the basis for the application of hudud is justice, so God will establish a just state even if it is an infidel and will not establish an unjust state even if it is a Muslim one.
6- Where is the outcome of the report of the fact-finding committee to heal the hearts of the families of the martyrs and the injured, as long as those who killed the martyrs and injured the injured are still free, the country's deteriorating situation will continue to deteriorate.
7. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O people, what doomed those before you was that if the honourable man stole, they left him, and if the weak man stole, they enforced the limit on him. Has justice been applied to all the symbols of the former regime so that people feel that the revolution has succeeded and ended? Do not tell me that the judiciary is the reason because there are some symbols of the former regime who have not been brought to court yet, and do not allow anyone to mention their names, and you know what I mean.
8- Being from the so-called political Islam movement (and I do not recognise these labels) does not mean that you are infallible or that God will defend you and defeat your opponents, but you must take the means of success and victory and not rely on slogans, as people now mistrust those who raise these slogans, as people now care about actions rather than slogans.
9- The concept of the end justifying the means has no place in these times when the media exploits the slightest mistakes and opponents cheer. I see that you are playing politics with all its disadvantages, and unfortunately, politics with its lies, hypocrisy and alliances with the enemies of the nation contradicts the Islamic slogans that you were calling for before you ruled the country.
10- Your fear of returning to the detention centres and dissolving the group makes your thoughts scattered, forcing you to accept decisions that are not in the interest of the country but in favour of the group.
The solution in my humble opinion
1- You are travelling on a single road as if you are driving a train to the abyss, so you must pause and review your past mistakes and try to reach radical solutions to them, but postponing the solution of the issues with the policy of giving painkillers is not a cure, but rather you make the issues accumulate until they explode at some point.
2- The question of the existence of opposition to you is inevitable. In the era of the Prophet and his successors, there were different sects of Jews, Christians, hypocrites and others, and the Prophet and the Rashidun Caliphs contained them, but I see that you do not contain the opposition, but ignore their demands or antagonise them in many demands, and this is not the right policy.
3- The current state of turmoil in Egypt will continue throughout your rule unless you change your policy. If you think that the opposition will get bored, you are delusional, as long as the problems are not solved, the unrest will remain.
4- There are those who are waiting for your stubbornness and failure to return to power again, and unfortunately your policies so far help them in their plans, so you must block their path to return to power again.
5- The issue that you are the guardians of the revolution and the rest of the revolutionary factions have nothing to do with what you do is one of the biggest mistakes you have made.
I have explained my remarks to you, which I hope you understand well, because your success in the coming period is the success of the revolution and your failure is the failure of the revolution, and your continuation on the same path and with the same policy will harm you and Egypt in the end. I know that many of you love and fear Egypt and are sincere in your love for God and the homeland, so please accept my remarks with great patience, as our goal is one and the same, which is the good of the homeland.
Major Tamer Badr"

Rabaa and Nahda squares sit-in

Major Tamer Badr did not support the demands of the Rabaa sit-in, but he was against the dispersal of the sit-in and the killing of peaceful protesters. He tried to unite the revolutionary comrades, whether Brotherhood, 6 April, socialists or independents, and wrote several articles calling on the revolutionary comrades to unite among themselves

Early Retirement

In July 2014 The penalty against Major Tamer Badr has been officially suspended and the sentence against him has been reduced from a four-year prison sentence to a two-year suspended sentence.

Since Major Tamer Badr was released from prison in January 2013, he wanted to return to the army to work in an administrative position away from any contact with citizens, but in light of the army's continued interference in politics and against the interests of the revolution, he had no choice but to request retirement in June 2014. The Armed Forces approved his request, and he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel as of 1 January 2015 after a two-year delay in promotion and retired on 2 January 2015 after more than twenty years of service in the Armed Forces.

Major Tamer Badr has requested retirement for the following reasons:

1) He is continuously monitored in all his movements and calls. He would not have been able to endure this surveillance if he returned to work inside the army, and he could not change the situation inside the army under this surveillance.

2- He was sure that he would not be promoted to become a brigadier general or general given his previous positions with the revolution unless he gave up many principles that he was not willing to give up.

3 - If he returned to service, he was required to listen and obey and could not afford to remain silent about any wrongdoing he saw, in which case there would have been trouble throughout his time in the army.

4 - His disagreement was not with the army, but with the policy of the army commanders towards the revolution, and had it not been for their policy, he would have wished to continue serving in the army.

5 - He was not prepared for me to one day stand with my weapon towards the Egyptians. He entered the military academy to point his weapon towards Israel, and he was not prepared for me to be one of the implants of the Mubarak regime and its associates.

Work as a quality and safety consultant

After Major Tamer Badr retired from the army, he tried to work in security companies and found that most of those who own or manage them are retired army officers. Of course, when he meets with them, they discover the reasons for his exit from the army because he left the army at a young age, and the result is that he is not accepted to work with them.

Tamer Badr decided to change course and decided to study courses that qualify him to work in the field of occupational safety and health in order to work in one of the factories located next to him in Sixth of October City as a labour safety officer.

During this period, Tamer Badr obtained several international certificates such as NEBOSH, OOSHA, AOSH, OSAS and other certificates through which he can work in the field of occupational safety and health until he starts his career again in another field, as he would not be able to stay at home without work for the rest of his life.

On the first of October 2015, Tamer Badr was able to work in a company that qualifies factories and companies to obtain an ISO certificate and was able to work in it as a safety and occupational health consultant. Over time, Tamer Badr gained experience in the field of ISO 9001 consultancy related to quality and became a safety, occupational health and quality consultant, and through this work, he gained great experience in how to manage factories and companies and how to deal with workers in the civil sector. After that, he was promoted at work and became a reviewer to review and test companies until they obtain the ISO certificate.

The Book of the Awaited Messages

On 18 December 2019, Tamer Badr released his eighth book (The Awaited Messages), which deals with the great signs of the hour, in which he stated that our master Muhammad is only the Seal of the Prophets as mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah and not the Seal of Messengers as is common among the general Muslims and that we are waiting for other messengers to show Islam over all religion and to interpret the similar verses of the Quran and to warn people of the doom of smoke and stressed that these messengers will not replace the Islamic sharia with another sharia but will be Muslims on the platform of the Book and the Sunnah. But because of this book, Tamer Badr was subjected to more accusations such as (igniting strife between Muslims - the Antichrist or one of his associates - madman - misguided - infidel - apostate who must be punished - I have a conspiracy to write to people - who are you to come contrary to what Muslim scholars agree on - how can we take our faith from an officer in the Egyptian army - etc.)

Al-Azhar's position on the Book of the Awaited Messages

The book was banned from printing a few days after the first edition went out of print and the second edition was released, and almost three months after the book was published in publishing houses, as it was released in mid-December 2019 and was banned from Al-Azhar at the end of March 2020.
